Should you bring washing in before sunset?

Often: yes. Evening conditions can reverse progress - fabrics cool, humidity rises, and dew can re-wet surfaces.

Why washing can feel damp again

As the sun drops, surfaces cool. Cooler fabric can sit closer to the dew point, and the air near the ground often becomes more humid. That combination reduces evaporation and can even cause dew to settle.

When you should bring it in

  • Anything that’s almost dry but not quite (finish indoors with airflow).
  • Heavy items (towels, bedding) that cool quickly and hold moisture.
  • Still evenings where dampness builds fast.

When it can be OK to leave it

If it’s genuinely dry, the air stays breezy, and humidity remains low, you can sometimes leave things longer - but it’s the exception, not the rule in the UK.
